Government accused of continuing to be callous towards farmers

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has cried hoarse about yet another ‘injustice’ meted out to the Telangana region by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy by giving key portfolios to people of other regions.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, TRS legislator T. Harish Rao regretted that unlike in the past when they had K.R. Suresh Reddy hailing from the region as Speaker, the privilege was taken away this time. Important portfolios like Roads and Buildings, Power and the like were given away to others and those allocated to those belonging to the region were ‘insignificant’ responsibilities.

Party’s general secretary Niranjan Reddy said that in the past five years of the Congress rule, not a single vacancy of the position of High Court judge was filled with a person hailing from Telangana. It was common a practice for the Chief Minister of a State, in consultation with the High Court, to finalise and recommend names for such positions and forward the list to the Supreme Court of India, he said urging Dr. Reddy to take up such an exercise at least now.

Also, Mr. Reddy demanded that G.O. 610 be implemented in letter and spirit when it came to appointment of judicial officials. There were several vacancies at the level of public prosecutors and government pleaders, he said.

TRS floor leader Etala Rajender and Mr. Harish Rao criticised the government for claiming to be ‘farmer-friendly’ but continuing to be callous towards ryots. They recalled that though rice procurement technically began on May 16 after the election process was over, it was yet to take off.

Farmers were virtually spending nights on the roads between their villages and procurement centres running from pillar to post to get officials to buy their paddy at Rs. 930, the MSP fixed. However, with two rains in between, discolouring had taken place and added to the moisture content for which Rs. 100 was being reduced and only Rs. 830 being paid.
